I began my graphic arts career as a typesetter in the 1970s. I got involved very early with personal computers, and specialized in converting text and data files from early computers into typeset copy. In 1984, I joined Central Graphics in San Diego. When PostScript RIPs came out, I became the print production manager of San Diego’s largest service bureau.
When the first desktop publishing applications came out, I learned them, and was soon teaching them to my clients. In 1992, I moved to San Francisco where I became Training Manager at Rapid, a service bureau and typesetting company. I taught users how to prepare files for printing, and developed and taught classes in QuarkXPress, InDesign, Acrobat, and Illustrator. In 2002, I became an independent trainer and consultant.
I have co-authored Moving to InDesign with David Blatner and Christopher Smith, and Real World Adobe Creative Suite 2 with Sandee Cohen. I has taught at many industry conferences—including Seybold Conferences, Creative Suite Conference, and InDesign Conference. In the Bay Area, I teach at AcademyX and the Printing Industry of Northern California classrooms. I’m a regular contributor to InDesignSecrets.com and InDesign Magazine. I’m an Adobe Certified Instructor and Adobe Certified Expert.
